The graphic novel format offers the opportunity to integrate graphic design elements, images, and story-telling with sound instructional design practices to create unique and engaging instructional products. Max and Bart is designed for children ages 6-9. It is a story about a little boy named Max who, after learning about bats in school,  dreams he's a bat. In the dream, Max meets Bart, a slightly older bat, and together they fly through the night. As they fly, Bart teaches Max all about the lives of bats.

Creating Max & Bart was a turning point for me. I discovered how much I love digital storytelling! This little project grew into a Chinese version for children visiting a new bat research station in Chengdu, China, and then into a full-fledged children's book published by the Sichuan University Press. My work on Max & Bart has led to new contract work creating instructional hand-outs for children.
